This little quaint bistro is tucked away at one desolate
corner of a more depressingly empty Chambers Mall, diagonally opposite to the
much vibrant Acropolis mall at Kasba. The old-world English themed lovely
dine-in joint is not too big, but it is not that cramped since it has got very
limited seats inside. The first outlet of Mrs. Magpie created much stir in the
city and people started bookmarking the place for their signature cupcakes,
birthday cakes, hot chocolate, etc. So when this second outlet opened up in a
bistro avatar it attracted even more eyeballs. Lately the place is doing very
good, despite the low footfall at the mall which houses this café.
LOCATION - - - - - This place is more of a destination
restaurant for many, including me and I am ready to drive for an hour or two
just to come and eat at this place. The place is close to the Seimens campus at
Kasba, just opposite the Gitanjali stadium and diagonally opposite to the
Acropolis mall. You can park your car inside the Chambers Mall, no issues with
that.
AMBIANCE - - - - - As already said, the place is a dreamy picturesque
café somewhat cut off from the din and bustle of the city. It looked even more
beautiful with the Christmas decors on. The vintage looking colored glass
doors, the ornate outdoor seating arrangement, the wooden flooring, the solid
wooden furniture, one typical old-world iron table in the middle (where we were
seated), the antique finished sea-green colored wooden chest, everything looks
so perfect here, more like a café in late 1800s or early 1900s maybe somewhere
in Europe! I loved every bit of it, though there is more scope to turn this
place into one authentic looking English café which I’m sure can be done, with
time. The place is not so big, though the ambiance is relaxed, need to plan and
book the place if you are planning to visit in a bigger group.
FOOD - - - - - We ordered for:
Hot Chocolate – One of the must-haves at Mrs. Magpie. The
hot chocolate is dense, warm and not overtly sweet, the density is just right.
The perfect cup of rich chocolaty drink that one ardent chocolate lover would
be looking for.
Minty Mojito – I did not like this and had more expectation
from this drink. It was very fizzy drenched with rather dry mint leaves which
had no minty kick in them, tasted close to a sweetened aerated drink with loads
of dried mint leaves inside.
Dauphinoise Potato – This was one heavenly dish prepared
only with potatoes, I had never had something close to this and at such
reasonable price! I’ll surely try this every time I am here, it was so well
prepared. Thin sliced potatoes slowly cooked in the oven butter, cream and
garlic. One of the best potato-based sides I had ever had.
Honey Mustard Chicken – One wholesome dish with bell
peppers, diced carrots and chicken in it. Drenched in honey, Dijon mustard and
olive oil the chicken and the veggies exudes warmth and happiness when you have
them.
Mutton Goulash – One real good find according to me. From
now on, whenever I want Goulash I will come to this place. Goulash is basically
a stew of meat and vegetables and it originated in Hungary. Goulash has several
variants and the one at this eatery lacked any soup in it. It was a wholesome
amount of shredded and roughly cut pieces of mutton (mixed with garlic, fennel
seeds, caraway seed, carrot, parsley root and peppers) sitting on a
bed of mashed potatoes and sprinkled with pomegranate bits. This is one
absolute must try for meat lovers!
After 8ish Cupcake – One of the best cup cake flavors
available here. It has a chocolate muffin base with chocolaty topping having a
little kick of alcohol in it and a refreshing dash of mint, yum!
PRICE & SERVICE - - - - - The price is quite reasonable
considering the quality of food, presentation and ambiance, the place is
perfect for your date! The prices include the VAT, only 5.8% service tax is
charged extra. It will cost you nearly INR 900 inclusive all taxes, for two.
The service is absolutely spot on, very amiable servers who were very well
informed and helpful.
SUMMARY - - - - - Here are my granular ratings:
Food quantity: 3.8/5
Food quality: 5/5
Food presentation: 4.5/5
Value for money: 4/5
Ambiance: 4.6/5
Service: 4/5
Overall a 4.3 out of 5 rating from my side, which is pretty
awesome to be honest :) Do try this place out with your loved ones, this place
is definitely not for your business discussions, so please avoid if you are not
in a relaxing mood. This is one of the very few newly added hidden treasures in
the city. Do try them out if you already haven’t.
Please give a thumbs up if you really like this post. Thanks
everyone!
